First Ride - Fast Paced Road Riding, Birmingham To Auburn Hills

(Posted by Aaron)
So I went on my first group road ride this Tuesday along with Luke.
It was faced paced, 23-27mph group riding - lots of fun, excellent exercise!
I want to start with saying that I am totally new to the sport of group road riding. I’ve always dreampt that maybe someday I could keep up with the road riders when I’d see them streaming along at high speeds - but at the time I was dreaming from a mountain bike with high pressure road slicks. I ride the mountain bike fast, but not 25mph fast. See the thing is, I’ve always been in love with fast-paced riding; whatever the bike, you’ll find me pushing it as fast as it can go. It’s a trait thats been with me ever since the training wheels came off. But pushing myself alongside a group is something totally new to me - and I found that it’s something I could get used to, but I have a lot to learn.
Kind of a back story: Recently Jon hooked me up with a sweet Jamis Carbon Fiber Xenith. Jon mentioned his plans to get back into racing this summer and I also brought up my interest in racing. Long story short - Jon has me training now, and both Luke and Jon said that one of the best ways to train is the Tuesday Night Rides at Derby Middle School.
The Tuesday Night Rides start at 6pm. Groups are set in three classes, A, B and C. The A-class is the professional Tour De France style ride - think full-on super sport elite athletes racing along averaging around 27mph. The B-class is just as fast but with no drops - the group sticks together and isn’t so much about racing as it is about training and experience. The C-class isn’t as fast but it gives entry level riders a chance to learn the route and experience real group riding at speeds averaging around 18-20mph.
I rode with the B-class…
